First Two Pages

In Wide Reading lessons, our Year 8s learned how important it is to start a story with a ‘hook’ to reel in readers, in addition to a captivating blurb and an appealing cover.

The class was divided into groups of four, with each person given a novel. They had to read the first two pages to the group, then decide as a group which was most likely to be appealing to other boys their age. Finally, each group nominated someone to read the first two pages to the whole class.

There were a few surprises, with some boys choosing to borrow books with not-so-appealing covers, while other books that looked good weren’t chosen because they sounded boring to begin with. Hopefully, the boys will now take these ideas and incorporate them into their own stories.
